Greg Abbott Offers $10,000 Reward After Veteran Murdered

Governor Greg Abbott has offered a $10,000 reward after a navy veteran was killed at his retirement community.
Nelson Beckett was shot by a carjacker at about 12:45 p.m. on Saturday at the Lone Star Living retirement village.
Surveillance footage shows a man approaching Beckett and starting a conversation before shooting him and throwing him from his vehicle.
The suspect ran over the veteran as he fled the scene.
Tami Freund, Beckett’s daughter, said her father would “do anything for anyone.”.
“He told me all the time how lucky we are to have such a big, wonderful, loving Christian family. He loved big and loved his family so much,” Freund said in a statement sent to KPRC2.
Governor Abbott said he and his wife were “deeply saddened to hear of the murder of 90-year-old Navy veteran Nelson Beckett in Houston” and vowed to see the suspect put “behind bars”
According to the Houston Police Department, the gunman is described as a black man between the age of 25 and 30 years old. He remains at large and is presumed armed and dangerous.
The police found Beckett’s car abandoned at an apartment complex about 10 minutes away.
“Texas is already working with our local partners and providing full support in bringing this criminal to justice. I encourage anyone with information relating to this terrible crime to call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline or submit an anonymous tip online. Texas will always support the brave men and women who answered the call to serve in our nation’s military, and with the public’s help we will capture the murderer and put them behind bars,” Abbott said.
Steve Sandifer, who had been friends with Beckett for 47 years, told KPRC2 he was shocked by the killing.
“I told his daughter, I said, you know, had she called me that morning and said dad didn’t wake up this morning, I would have said, good. He’s lived his 90 years. He’s been a champion of faith and everything else. He’s lived a great life. But to hear that he had been murdered. That just that was just beyond me,” he said.
In addition to the reward issued by the Office of Texas Governor Abbott, Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect
Beckett leaves behind two children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Anyone with further information regarding the case is asked to notify the authorities and call the Houston Police at 713-308-3600.
